Hi
as an horticulturist, I have tried against the critters:
powdered Cayenne pepper with or without powdered Cloves in an oily base
you can brush the mixture on windowsill, trunks, etc..
In the oily base (olive or so), the cayenne pepper stays longer and sticks

I will surely try a few of these suggestions. I think we have reached
the trap choice. I did pour cayenne pepper down all the openings they
dug to get air - as I was dusting my flowers (really sprouts right now)
with pepper to discourage the deer from nibbling. IT seems to work.
I also put cayenne pepper over the bird feed. The birds don't mind but
the deer, squirrels and other mammals don't like it.
We had a very efficent cat for many years but she died a few years back
and I am not inclined to get a new one.
Thanks for all the suggestions. I did see one in a magazine that
suggested a spray of caster oil and dish detergent to be sprayed over
the area of infestation. I thought that would be an environment
friendly approach before death by trap.
Chasing them off to the neighbors that breed and harbored them in the
first place might just delay the solution since they may come back later
in bigger numbers.
Thanks again,
Nancy
