I will surely try a few of these suggestions.  I think we have reached 
the trap choice.  I did pour cayenne pepper down all the openings they 
dug to get air - as I was dusting my flowers (really sprouts right now) 
with pepper to discourage the deer from nibbling.  IT seems to work.

I also put cayenne pepper over the bird feed.  The birds don't mind but 
the deer, squirrels and other mammals don't like it.

We had a very efficent cat for many years but she died a few years back 
and I am not inclined to get a new one.

Thanks for all the suggestions.  I did see one in a magazine that 
suggested a spray of caster oil and dish detergent to be sprayed over 
the area of infestation.  I thought that would be an environment 
friendly approach before death by trap.

Chasing them off to the neighbors that breed and harbored them in the 
first place might just delay the solution since they may come back later 
in bigger numbers.
