I believe you'll find it both ways, and to some extent, it probably
depends on age: the older someone is, the more likely they are to have
the professional attitude you mention, even if they didn't go to
college.
College, per se, is not necessarily useless or a bad thing, don't get
me wrong. Having some college under your belt, if not a degree, is
likely a useful thing for many reasons...
but almost none of them point directly to success in a highly technical
field, any especially faster than someone who is adept, but did not go
to college for their knowlegde.
