Yes, it looks like you are correct for the version
that I just tested. (dclerk 5.0.05D4) However, I do
remember the earlier behaviour. I believe I was using
4.8 at the time.
I just checked the 5.00.05 read.me file and there is a
mention that the locking logic for new-style automatic
indexes was changed to allow multiple read-only
accesses.
