Odd things happening...

My understanding of the local dummys might add a bit to this discussion.

The local variables are cleared when you start or end an input processing.

So if I press U to update the variables are cleared, when I press ESC 
and return to the bottom prompts they are cleared also.

Now changing screens with processing does not release the input 
processing so they are not cleared.

If, however, you return to the filePro prompts and press 2 to get the 
other screen, you have ended and cleared the variables.  When you press 
U to update, the input processing is started again so cleared variables.

Now if you CHAIN to another table, the auto process is run so you clear 
local dummies.  If you CALL and then return to the orginal table they 
are not.

Each @key process uses its own variables which are cleared when it is 
finished.

I have a FREE filePro class today at 3PM EST covering the flow thru 
processing and it might help you see when the auto process table fits in 
and that might help pin this down.
