Changes to the current record made in automatic processing are written
to the record if and only if you are in update mode and subsequently
save the record.  This is true whether you are in *clerk or *report,
and regardless of any (ignored) WRITE statement.

The only difference here is that *clerk sometimes runs the automatic
processing when not in update mode, and *report is always in update
mode.
