System Edit

Greetings,

Is there a way to view the system edits?
The reason I am asking is I have copied and then modified the 
MMM_YY edit. I have modified the result to read JAN/01/2005. 

I know if you are in a MDY/ defined field
and just enter / the system will return 01/01/05. I want
to duplicate this behavior by copying what the system edit does. 

Can I view system edits?
If not, does someone know how the / to today's date works.
