weird link of two fields

Two particular fields in a file (field 143 and filed145) both defined as
(1,yesno).
When I go into field 145 and place a "y" or delete a "Y" it mirrors my
request in field 143 and visa versa.
When I run a report which chooses those records where field 145 does not
have a "y" it chooses those records even though the "Y" is in the field in
the record.
Programming correctly placed a "y" in 143 but not in 145 although the "Y" is
in 145.
I have been using this file for some time with no problem. This is a file
that I use for import where the data in the file is deleted and the import
then occurs subsequently. It is only when I run a report that places the "Y"
in 143 that the "Y" also appeared in 145.
There is no link to these two fields in any way through processing. I have
used this recreated file often and have never had the problem.
What can I do to fix it without killing the data and recreating the file?
Also, those fields are not related to any index.
