You could start by asking "what version of PCL does the printer support"
or "does it support printing from Linux".
If it supports PCL (any version) then the odds are that it is not a
Windows-only "printer". If it supports Linux printing, then either it
is not a Windows-only "printer", or the manufacturer has worked with
the Linux community to build a driver for their proprietary interface.
You can also check out <http://www.linuxprinting.org/printer_list.cgi>
for printers that are listed as "works perfectly", meaning the printer
probably accepts a standard printer language. Those listed under the
"paperweight" column are squarely in the Windows-only category. Those
in bewtween are anyone's guess, but probably in the "Windows-only but
someone has hacked something together" category.
