Sure would.
Actually, I've considered a filePro port more than once. To be honest,
that was the -original- goal. (Ask John, Jim, or anyone that was around
in my initial discussions in the fP Room when I started the project.)
I did the *SQL version (it supports three engines for sure, possibly
five although I don't have the server resources to test the other two
immediate potentials) both because I wanted it for the same reasons you
did, and because I wanted to get it down pat in something I do every day
(perl+mysql) before I tried doing it in filePro. It made sense to start
with what I knew best and then port it.
I think it would be really beneficial to add to many possible scenarios
that involve filePro. The only real reason I've put a hold on doing a
port is that I didn't really get the feeling that there was -any- serious
interest in it when I finished it and inquired as to interest within the
community about such a port. The silence was pretty deafening, so it was
put on indefinite hold--until there's either enough interest, or someone
wants to subsidize the port at a negotiated rate in exchange for letting me
retain copyright on the code. I can usually work out something mutually
equitable.
If there turns out to be sufficient interest, I would still do the port,
but it -is- involved, and the interest would have to be more than one or
two people for me to justify the time outlay. I'd say somewhere between
five and ten--closer to ten--people that would be pretty committed to
wanting it. I -still- think it's a great idea for fP, but I don't want to
waste time and resources on something if there's no interest. With people
moving towards web-based application environments, I'd have thought there'd
be more interest than there was.
For those in heterogeneous environments, FairPay is currently compatible
with MySQL, PgSQL, and MSSQL.
