OT: Coolest thing... SCO on 2003 server!

If the subject didn't clue you in...
Everyone who hates Windows, STOP reading now!

Okay, I'm going to assume I'm only talking to people who care. :-) Rick did
the coolest thing for me recently. He set up virtual pc for me on my 2003
server box. It is running SCO Open Server 6.0 and I can entirely copied my
old SCO system there. I can now lose one entire machine, one keyboard, one
source of noise and heat, one system that needs backing up every night. I
save the space and the noise, but there are so many benefits besides. It
just runs and runs from its little file on the 2003 server, and for all
practical purposes nothing has changed. I can still telnet (or ssh) to it.
It can still do nightly backups with BackupEDGE. I have the same number of
users available. The DevSys works, all is just as it was, except no need for
an entire separate machine. It is using the copy of FP I would have kept
using on the old machine. It is just too cool. I will buy an upgrade to
Open Server 6 of the BackupEDGE and FacetWin that I can't live without.
Otherwise, I'm set with a whole new system... all inside another system!
(Funny, I have had this SCO box since Xenix days. I have carefully moved
every bit of data since whenever that was, through every intervening O/S SCO
put out, up through 5.6. Now, I can just migrate the data onto the 6.0 box
and it may work another 20 years.

There are 2003 server backup programs that will backup the SCO 6.0 as well
as everything else on this box and the rest of my network. I'll be doubly
backed-up. Plus, I can take the jukebox which is now dedicated to the SCO
system and move it to the 2003 server where it will do more work. So, I will
set up a complete backup system that will backup not only the 2003 server,
but also all my other PC's ... and the SCO box, which is now just simply "a
file" on the server. By continuing to do the BackupEDGE save every night, I
get the best of both worlds as far as safeties go.

I use the SCO for filePro and data storage, so it's the most important box I
have... and now it is all in just one file! Until I see this work smoothly
for another month or so, I still won't really believe it myself... but so
far everything I do works, everything I need is right there, and it is all
on one super-powerful 3.6 box with fast serial-ATA drives... I don't have to
waste money on two fast systems anymore. I can deploy the old SCO box
somewhere else now. Or use it as a backup SCSI server for various older
systems I have around.

Just thought some of you would find this cool. Incidentally, aside from SCO,
you could easily have a 24/7 running Linux, or Windows 98 or whatever as
other virtual PC's. It is truly amazing.

Take care,
John
