RJ edit

I have two, two character fields.
One is # edit and one is RJ edit.
Data entry is into the # field where (1) is 1_.
RJ is filled = to the # field where (1) is _1.
With -v processing, I select a beginning and ending range of RJ and
subtotal using the RJ field.

My processing using about 85 dummy data records works fine using the RJ
edit.
Customer's processing containing about 4,000 records does not.
Customer's data says it begins selecting records, but freezes without
doing so.
Rebuilding the RJ index, deleting the RJ index and rebuilding it did not
change the selection freeze. I looked for higher and lower ascii
characters in a record but found none.
I changed the RJ field edit to .0 in the customer's file and rebuilt
the index. It then worked fine.

Is there a rule that the RJ edited data will not sort properly; similar
to the rule that the $ edit field data should not be used to do math?
