I believe Chad has found the key. If you search Microsoft's site for
"SimulatePassThrough" you will find some background information on this
issue.

Commercial note: Instead of using Windows' LPD, you could use Print
Wizard's LPD (PWLPD), part of Print Wizard Server Edition. It has several
advantages:

1. It will determine automatically whether the print job contains escape
codes.

2. If there are NO escape codes, it will auto-fit reports to the page.

3. If there ARE escape codes, it can be configured to either a) send them
transparently to the printer, or b) parse and translate them (assuming
they are PCL) to print on ANY printer.

4. Produce PDFs or faxes.
