hehhe  after all that, if 4.5 doesn't have export -a, then you probably just 
have to do what everyone else showed in the first place, use only one export 
command, ascii, no flags at all other than r=\n , construct your whole 
output line in one variable and
say out(1)=z once for the header and once for each data record. you provide 
the commas and quotes explicitly in the variable.

The reason I took such interest in this thread though was because I do this 
a lot and so I don't mind at all having nailed down the exact operation of 
the export command on the newer versions just for my own sake, especially 
since the docs have falsehoods and this would have been the only way to 
really find out the truth anyways. At least now the next time I need to make 
an export I'll spend less time chasing my tail.
