Yeah, see, crypt() will handle it...but passwd(1) needs to handle it as
well as the underlying authentication systems.  I think you're right about
the likelihood of it -not- working.

Given MD5 (and even Blowfish), it's pointless anyway--the original DES has
recently been declared unfit for use by the standards body that oversees
critical system security standards, and I'm not sure of the status of 3DES.
