On *nix systems ghostscript handles this quite nicely.  I think that CUPS
has provisions to create PDF files as well, but I haven't looked into it in
detail.  I often use the convert utility from ImageMagick to convert
PostScript(tm) to PDF:

	convert filename.ps filename.pdf

On a slightly related note, I've found that acroread on SuSE 9.0 seems to
generate PostScript that won't print through CUPS, and that using ``xpdf''
program works fine.
