Not really. You don't understand the full context. It was originally
supported as part of the ext2 filesystem via ext2-utils--a specialised set
of filesystem manipulation utilities.
If it were a standard linux VFS layer thing, they might actually do
something about getting an #ifdef at the least tacked into GNU fileutils to
do exactly what you propose. But it's custom and not globally supported,
therefore it's not done that way.
