And the ports tools are handy.  When there was a the flaw in the
SSL Apache last February, all I had to do was type:

portupgrade apache*

and just let it run.  The rsync fix I mentioned to Mark that
my portaudit program mailed to me was fixed the same way.

There is a limit depending on your base system.  Since the OS and
kernel are thought of as an entity - not a separate kernel as under
Linux - they should be run together.

What will happen if you try to run too old a version - the base OS
programs that depend on certain changes in the kernel are going to
fail or complain loudly. As I recall there were changes from the
4.0 to the later versions that would probably make a 4.0
problematic, but later 4.x versions should be fine.

:-)

This 'pig' line goes back to a phrase that Mark and I have tossed
about in emails.

It's a variant on the old "Never try to teach a pig to sing, it
will only frustrate you and it annoys the hell out of the pig"

That seems to adequately describe so many of the OS wars and their
follow-on arguments.
