I can understand that. I worked for big companies for most of my
life, and ran into the same problem. Managers just don't understand that,
due to the rapidly changing technology, computer people have much more
urgent training and convention attendance needs than most of the other
people within the company.
I suggest that you do as I did, and offer to pay for at least some
of the convention expenses out of your own pocket. For example, often I was
able to talk the boss into letting me off on a couple of "comp" days, if I
paid for the travel and/or convention costs. Your education is something
that belongs primarily to YOU, and it's something that you will take with
you when you move from company to company.
If the boss won't budge and you can't get time off or you can't
afford all the convention costs, I can sympathize with that. As a service
to the filePro community, I spend a lot of effort (with very little return)
in order to videotape the filePro conference each year. So you could
purchase a set of video tapes or DVDs of the entire conference for
substantially less than the videos would cost if we hired a professional
video team to do them.
The video tapes have an additional bonus. If you are a once or
twice a year edit writer, like I am, you can always pop the tape or DVD into
your computer and re-watch the edits lecture.
If you are in a non-profit group, or are otherwise impoverished to
the point where you can't even afford the modestly priced set of videos, let
me know, and I'll discuss getting you a low cost (or even no cost) set of
the video tapes with people at fPtech.
In another light, I suppose we could ask fPtech for both a white
paper and a lecture. If somebody is going to take the time to prepare a
white paper, it wouldn't take all that much more time to deliver it in a
lecture at the fP conference.
