You shouldn't be if you use a journalling fs.  :)

I don't understand your quandry.  If you install fP in /u/appl and adjust
the variables in fppath to fit, fP will run properly.

You're citing cases where you've got hardcoded entries to scripts and such
that are expected to be in /appl.  

The solution seems quite simple.  Install to /u/appl [or wherever], and for
your legacy accomodations:

     ln -s /u/appl /appl
