Install a version of linux that has glibc 2.2 or higher. :( I haven't
dared risk trying this on a version of linux that's very...integrated with
its hardware. I know for a fact that it's a bad idea to even think of
trying to put them side by side. "Sheer madness," was one friend's
comment. :)
Chances are, if you update it, some things might break. Very probably.
It's better to just change distributions at this point. 6.2 all the way
through 8.0 are EOL, and 9 goes away April 31.
