What was interesting was I pulled the files off on an intel
machine, and the backup utility was done on an SGI.  The files were
all compressed but the utility didn't have any compressed
extension.  A 'file' command showed me that.

ISTR that I had to run dd with the conv=swab option - but memory is
a bit hazy.

Now that is a big jump.  I don't think I've ever done a 20-fold
space increase.
