When I signed my message with "Stockler the timer" I started
to add a PS to tell how I earned that name - by counting the
cursor blinks while something transpired.

Thanks for remembering.

Later I wrote a program to test various flavors of AWK doing
the various things they do, using "time" to test 12 instances
of their doing whatever, throwing out the high and the low and
then averaging the others.

PS - For AWK users, let it be known that MAWK won, hands down
     on almost all tests, GAWK was second, and any versions
     of the "original" AWK came in third (but thanks to Brian
     Kerhnigan for still maintaining it).
