You're correct, and it's precisely on those grounds that I think this
modification I'm suggesting is a good idea.  See my reply to Ken.

Certainly.  As long as it's documented.  but in teh case where it's
likely that next to nobody is depending on the behavior, the fix is 3
or 4 lines of code, and the fix won't even break people's workarounds
-- what would *you* do?  Fix?  Or document?

I know which choice *I* would make.
