Password Problem

The password is not on the output format, just the processing, so the F8
function doesn't work for these. I can get into the output format with
no problem, but if I try to look at the processing, it asks for a
processing password. Sometimes, I can use vi to remove the password, I
can actually read the processing table and know where the password is.
Other times, the whole file is unreadable (just a bunch of characters)
so I don't know which is the password. If it somehow acquired a site
password, wouldn't all of the tables have a password on them?

Well, I have tried several combinations to produce this symbol, here is
the latest;
$1b ( 0 N #167

I really need to print this symbol. My printer will print the symbol if

I use it in a word document or e-mail.
I am remote to the Linux server, so I cannot test directly on a system
printer. But, that should be an issue as most of our printing is
remote.

I am not well versed on creating print codes, so perhaps someon e could
point out what I am missing in the above attempt.

Thanks,

Richard D. Williams

We have been having a problem with passwords on output processing and I
was wondering if anyone else has had this problem and if so, what can we
do about it. Some of our output processing tables have acquired
passwords somehow. There are only 2 of us doing the programming (we do
not have any outside consultants) and we have not given passwords to
these tables. So, obviously, we can't get into the tables to modify
programs. Backups won't help as we had cycled through our 5 tapes
before we realized something was wrong. Not all of the processing
tables in any one file have passwords, only a few and it can occur on
automatic, input and/or output processing. I traveled to New York last
week to another one of our offices and they had the same problem there.
We recently converted from version 4.8 to 5.0 and the problem seems to
have happened after that time so we didn't know if there was a
connection.

Sometimes the table gets a ghost password from copying, moving, etc.
you
can try going into the Define Output mode for the offending file and
use the
F8 function, go down thru the syntax and assign a new blank password.
That would be the first thing I would try.

What was the result?

What else did you try, and what were the results?

I don't recall if you've answered this yet, but what is the exact
printer
(make and model) that you're using?

Also, what is the computer setup? (What system is the printer attached
to? Is filePro on that remote system, or a local system? How are you
printing? Etc., etc., etc.)

I haven't been paying close attention, so pardon me if I'm not totally
tuned in.

First, whenever you deal with a character higher than decimal 127, it's
not enough to know what numeric value it has. You have to know numeric
value IN A PARTICULAR CHARACTER SET. The section sign has a Unicode
value
of A7 (hex), which is also its value in the ISO Latin 1 set, and also
its
value in Windows codepage 1252. However, that would NOT be its value in
the DOS character set (aka. codepage 437). In fact, I don't see it
there.

Try poking around in the Windows program "charset" (Start:Run:Charset).

When you want to print something, there are two general ways to do it:

1) Set the printer into a particular character set, and then send the
right character value. How you do this depends on the printer you have,
and what character sets is includes.

2) Send a bitmap or other downloadable definition of the character, and
print that. This is what the Windows printer driver does when you want
to
print characters (or fonts) that are not built in to the printer.
However,
this is not a trivial matter when printing from filePro (or Unix/Linux
in
general).

So what to do? You have stated that you are running fP remotely. I
assume
that means through a terminal emulator. Your terminal emulator may give
you some assistance with this. Check with the vendor.

If you use AnzioWin, with its built-in Print Wizard logic, you can print
any character. We include a printcode table that defines many special
characters, specified in Unicode values. The Print Wizard logic
automatically selects the fonts to be used. You can even print Russian,
Chinese, etc. More on Anzio is available at our website.

When your processing tables were last saved I assume that you had a
different /etc/fppath file. If you can restore an old version of this
file
your problems will probably go away.

I believe that the 4th line of this file is an encoded checksum of your
site
password. As long as you create and save the processing tables with
that
line in place filepro will not ask you for the site password. Since it
changed, filepro thinks you have moved these files to a different site
so it
is asking for it now. If you can't find the old /etc/fppath file then
If
your tables are stored as ascii you should be able to use a regular text
editor to strip the passwords. Otherwise fptech should be able to strip
them for you for a fee.

Good Luck.
