Like lots of other pronouns used in our industry, they are not 
always a true definition of their application.

My guess is that "dummy" coming from "test, temporary, recyclable"
was chosen because these variables were, initially just that, test
variable used to temporarily hold information that could be used
over and over again.

Then came the "global" dummy variable which is not that dummy!
