I live in the Windows world.
For the size system, based on users, you would require a much larger windows
server to support that many users.
You will take a performance hit from Server 2003 enterprise vs *nix on the same
server.
As for desktop, win XP service pack 1 has been very stable. There are choices
as to email clients and browsers to avoid the Outlook/IE problems.
Since your expertise seems to be with *nix, stay with it. There can be a steep
learning curve to handling Win server 2003 issues unless your company is going
to send you to school.
Factor in the learning curve cost when implementing a Window environment.
