XFree86 and Xorg both have had specific monitor configurations for IBM
laptops for several years now.  On SuSE >= 8.2, one selects the monitor
manufacturer as IBM, then chose the appropriate resolution and monitor type
(e.g. 1024x768 TFT for my TP 600).  SuSE 9.2 Professional even has some
ThinkPad specific utilities under the KDE menu system.

I had it working on Caldera OpenLinux 2.3 and eDesktop 2.4, but haven't
tried seriously since switching to SuSE a couple of years ago.  If I want
to listen to music, I'll use my iPod (another good point in favor of one of
the Apple laptops :-).
