Probably because on some systems, more -is- less (symlink).  Less clearly
shows that this is part of the default LESSBINFMT, which displays binary
data in reverse <hex_value> notation.

Granted.  But how does that correlate to his \20?  maybe it was getting
truncated in vi.  A quick check shows that 132 decimal is 204 octal.  I bet
he dropped the 4's on the ground.
