Bob,

I should have mentioned my tests with FacetWin's color settings. When I
first started on this problem, I spent a good deal of time with Will from
FacetCorp support going over the various settings. None did the trick. They
all said "bright, brighter, brightest... etc." but everything kept the color
"lt_red" invisible. When you suggested these settings in your note, I
decided to try them again. It is truly amazing, but the one listed as
"console" works perfectly! I have no explanation. We simply _must_ have
tried this before, but it certainly didn't do what it does today... I found
my setting at <NONE> where I always specifically put them. (This may
actually be the default, even, I don't remember.) I always do this because
the color settings that say "bright, brighter, etc." make the "lt_red" block
and most of the others SO much darker. It has always been a worse setting
for me. To try this and see what I mean... go to the color settings and
pick one while "setcolor" is on the screen. Look at what happens to the
little red block... better yet, look at what happens to the line of color
values for lt_red background (line number nine in their display). All the
settings which say bright, brighter and so on make this particular line
_very_ dark. I don't know why. However, when I tried the "console" setting
just for grins tonight, WHAM! it sets it much BRIGHTER!!! Thanks you so
much. I can't tell you how much this helps. You may have extended my use of
the computer by some months!! Again, I have no idea why we overlooked the
"console" setting before... or why it didn't appear to work. I don't even
care. It works now, and the two displays are just about identical... at
least i can't tell the difference anymore and I can see the little word
"red" again. you wouldn't believe how disconcerting it is not to be able to
see a word you _know_ is there!

Thanks again Bob,

John

P.S. I am feeling a little stupid that my testing most recently didn't once
again include checking all the FacetWin color settings... but they hadn't
worked that way when Will and I tested this stuff a few months ago... so
maybe their driver has changed since then, or my new video card respects
what they are doing in different cases now and didn't before... or whatever.
All I know is I had completely discounted their color section for just
changing the values around in ways that did not really affect brightness in
the sense of the word I'm using it in (real overall intensity of the whole
display). Check for yourself, when you pick the various options. The
background seems to go darker to give the illusion that the foreground is
brighter when it really isn't. You'll see what I mean. Regardless, the
"console" setting does actually make the foreground color "lt_red" much
brighter on my PC now and that is all I was trying to get. Thanks again. And
thanks for not calling me an idiot for not re-checking these settings before
I put up this question. However, I never would have checked them again had
I not done so... so it was really worth it for me as stupid as it makes me
look. :-)
